Nelson Mandela Biography
His full name is Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. He was born in Mvezo, 18 July 1918 and died on 05 December 2013. His father was Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa and his mother was Noqaphi Nosekeni.
Childhood

Became an Activist and Was Imprisoned
As an activist, Nelson Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) from 1942. Because of his anti-apartheid activities, he served various sentences.
On August 5 1962, police arrested Nelson Mandela on charges of inciting a labor strike and leaving the country without permission. He was then imprisoned in Marshall Square, Johannesburg.
Then on October 25, 1962, he was sentenced to 5 years in prison and on June 12, 1964, Nelson Mandela and a group of other activists were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Nelson Mandela was then transferred to prison on Robben Island. He was confined there for 18 years. then in April 1982, he was transferred to Polsmoors prison in Cape Town along with a number of senior ANC leaders such as Walter Sisulu, Andrew Mlangeni, Ahmed Kathrada, and Raymond Mhlaba.
While in prison, Nelson Mandela was often ill and underwent several operations. After recovering from tuberculosis which he suffered in December 1988, he was transferred to Victor Persters prison in the nearby Paarl region.

Nelson Mandela served as President of South Africa for about 5 years (May 1994 – June 1999) after winning the election and becoming the first black president with de Klerk as Deputy President.
The AIDS problem became a source of disappointment for people and Mandela regretted that during his reign, he paid little attention to this problem. His son, Makgatho, died of AIDS on January 6 2005.
