Nelson Mandela Biography

His full name is Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. He was born in Mvezo, 18 July 1918 and died on 05 December 2013. His father was Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa and his mother was Noqaphi Nosekeni.
Childhood

Became an Activist and Was Imprisoned

As an activist, Nelson Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) from 1942. Because of his anti-apartheid activities, he served various sentences.

On August 5 1962, police arrested Nelson Mandela on charges of inciting a labor strike and leaving the country without permission. He was then imprisoned in Marshall Square, Johannesburg.

While in prison, Nelson Mandela was often ill and underwent several operations. After recovering from tuberculosis which he suffered in December 1988, he was transferred to Victor Persters prison in the nearby Paarl region.
