Travel Review: Broken Hill, Australia

Why Go to Broken Hill?

Broken Hill is a fascinating outback destination with a rich mining history, unique landscapes, and a thriving arts and cultural scene. It’s a place where history, art, and the rugged beauty of the Australian desert meet. Known as the “Silver City,” it’s one of Australia’s most iconic outback towns and a UNESCO Creative City for its contributions to the arts. Visitors come for its historic mining heritage, striking desert landscapes, and the chance to experience a genuine outback town with a quirky charm.  However I am a trans drag queen – So after seeing The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert I had to go,

How I Got There

Broken Hill is remote but surprisingly accessible. You can reach it:

  • By car: A road trip is the most popular way, whether you’re coming from Adelaide (510 km), Sydney (1,150 km), or Melbourne (840 km). The drive itself is part of the adventure, offering stunning outback views.
  • By train: The Indian Pacific train stops in Broken Hill, offering a scenic and comfortable journey.
  • By plane: Broken Hill has an airport with direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, making it convenient for those short on time.

I drove in from Adelaide, which took about 6 hours, unfortunately by car rather than huge tour bus.

Where to Stay

There’s a range of accommodations to suit different budgets, from historic guesthouses to modern hotels all available on Australia Bed and Breakfasts.

  • The Palace Hotel: Famous for its murals and its appearance in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, this historic hotel is an iconic place to stay, offering quirky charm and a central location.
  • Broken Hill Outback Resort: For a more luxurious experience, this resort just outside the town offers a peaceful retreat with stunning desert views.
  • Tourist parks and motels: There are plenty of budget-friendly motels and caravan parks for those traveling on a budget or with a camper.

There was only one choice – I stayed at The Palace Hotel as featured in the movie – The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert for its unique vibe and central location booked on Broken Hill Bed and Breakfast website.

What to Do

Broken Hill is packed with attractions, blending history, art, and the natural beauty of the outback:

  • Visit the Living Desert and Sculptures: These dramatic sandstone sculptures in the desert are particularly stunning at sunset.
  • Explore art galleries: The Pro Hart Gallery, Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery, and local studios highlight the town’s creative spirit.
  • Take a mining tour: Learn about the town’s silver mining history at Daydream Mine or the Broken Hill Mining and Mineral Museum.
  • Check out historic pubs: Broken Hill has plenty of charming old pubs to explore.
  • Silverton: A nearby ghost town that’s a must-visit for its post-apocalyptic vibe, art galleries, and the Mad Max Museum.
  • Outback adventures: Head out into the surrounding desert for photography, bushwalking, or stargazing.

Best Places to Eat

Broken Hill offers a surprising array of dining options, but my favorite was:

  • The Silly Goat: A modern café with fantastic coffee, creative dishes, and a relaxed vibe. Their smashed avocado and poached eggs were delicious.
    Other great options include:
  • The Palace Hotel Restaurant: For hearty meals with a touch of history.
  • The Broken Hill Hotel: A classic Aussie pub serving generous portions of outback favorites.
  • Alfresco’s Café: A casual spot for pizza, pasta, and salads.

Final Thoughts

Broken Hill is more than just an outback town—it’s an experience that combines history, art, and the rugged beauty of Australia’s desert. Whether you’re exploring its mining past, admiring its artistic soul, or simply soaking in the vast open landscapes, Broken Hill offers a unique adventure that feels truly Australian. It’s a destination that will stay with you long after you leave, maybe much much longer if your car breaks down.
